Koh Phangan. It's a small island, larger than Koh Tao but smaller than Koh Samui.
Popular still with the backpacker crowd, more so even than Koh Tao. It is, in some ways, the last bastion of refuge for the hard-core backpackers in Thailand. With most places in the country now being too expensive they huddle into the small island paradises like this one.
The beaches are nice and some scuba-diving and snorkalling operations have opened up shop too. A decent dive site 'Sail Rock' is just off to the south of the island.
The full-moon party is what spins the island into a frenzy of partying, pill-popping and out-and-out hedonism. Drug-busts are common but every heard numerous reports that certain locals here at the tourist spots are rip-off artists and conniving to de-fraud tourists. We won't deny that the expensive nature of the place is drawing undesirables to fleece farang.
The Areas in Koh Phangan include:
Hat Rin: The main ferry pier for the island. It's a lot more basic and rustic that Koh Tao's stone contraption but the islanders like it that way I guess. This is where the big partying is come full-moon.
